Aging Well at Carolina Bay – Social Opportunities You Can Hear

May 18, 2015 Last week our blog discussed the importance of staying active and pursuing your passions as the key to wellness.  Today, we unveil yet another way you can age (and live) well.  Be sure to tune in next Thursday for a third installment of our series for yet more ways wellness takes center stage at Carolina Bay . It seems as if everyone is talking about how diet and lifestyle are the way to maintain health and wellness as we age.  However, loneliness may be just as harmful to your health as a poor diet and a sedentary lifestyle. A study by the University of Chicago found that loneliness was just as harmful as smoking, obesity and drinking. Further, the study determined that it was quality not quantity of friendships that mattered most in deterring loneliness With age comes change.  As we age, the size of our social circles changes too and for many, shrinks.   Children leave home, people retire, couples divorce, neighbors relocate and friends or spouses pass away. Seniors who choose to remain in their home may find themselves increasingly more isolated and alone.  The silence of being alone can be deafening. A Wide Array of Social Opportunities When you think about moving to a retirement community, you usually think of someone else dealing with the yard work and home repairs. However, a major benefit of such a move is the tremendous social opportunities available to residents. Carolina Bay will offer many opportunities for connecting and developing relationships with new people, finding fun and intellectually stimulating activities and immersing yourself within our vibrant social landscape. Catch up on the latest news, grab a cup of coffee with neighbors or share stories over drinks at the Bar.  Take fitness classes or join a water aerobics class in the indoor swimming pool. Explore your intellectual interests through lifelong learning classes through the University of North Carolina at Wilmington as well as numerous clubs and volunteer opportunities. Here the possibilities will be limitless. Having friendships and staying socially connected are vital to healthy aging and overall well-being, just like a good diet and exercise.  Living in a vibrant community that helps to both foster friendships and create social opportunities for a more active lifestyle makes aging easier and more enjoyable.  Living in a community that offers those opportunities right outside your front door makes sense. Want to discover the how you can engage and interact when you call Carolina Bay home?  Visit the community website and discover how you can be a Priority Partner today.   Be sure to check back next Thursday for the third of our series- Social Opportunities You Can Hear.
