The award is a joint initiative between the International Council on Active Aging (ICAA) and NuStep, LLC. ICAA is a leader in connecting and defining the active-aging industry. NuStep manufactures fitness equipment widely used in healthcare, senior living and fitness.

Wellness is an area in which Carolina Bay at Autumn Hall is proud to lead the way. The senior living community has long recognized that wellness is best achieved by integrating various factors. Their INSPIRE program, which was developed by Liberty Senior Living almost nine years ago. It is a multi-faceted initiative reflecting all dimensions of wellness. Weelness Focus is reflected in its acronym: Inclusive, Nutritional, Spiritual, Physical, Intellectual, Recreational, and Engaging.

Wellness Endeavors

We are all committed to keeping INSPIRE at the forefront of our culture. This acheived with more than 30 weekly group exercise classes and educational lectures. In addition, there is community engagement, fresh and healthy dining options along with musical performances. Many interesting outings, an active residents’ council, and more.”

Some of the highlights of Carolina Bay at Autumn Hall’s wellness endeavors include its annual Olympics Week . Here residents compete in a variety of activities. In addition, the community recently introduced a new Masters Putting Tournament. Residents also enjoy the opportunity to participate in water sports classes. These include activities such as water polo, volleyball and basketball in the community’s saltwater pool. Carolina Bay at Autumn Hall also employs an agility coordinator. Responsible for leading Parkinson’s programming, dancercise, line dancing, drum circles, etc. Simply put, with all of the diverse offerings, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

High Participation in Wellness

Importantly, Carolina Bay at Autumn Hall’s team ensures a high volume of participation in wellness programming. Accomplished through offering various variety, but also by encouraging engagement for all skill and ability levels. Haley Kinne-Norris is the INSPIRE Wellness and Enrichment Coordinator. In that way, the wellness programming is more than maintaining levels of fitness and independence, said Haley. It is also proving to result in improvement. “We have residents who go from relying on a walker/assistive device to not needing one. That could be from recovering from health conditions or simply from becoming engaged in an active wellness program,” said Haley.

Unique Departmental Leadership

Another essential characteristic that distinguishes Carolina Bay at Autumn Hall’s wellness initiatives is that they’re set up as being interdepartmental, involving leadership and support from just about every department. “It’s well-rounded and holistic, including dining, marketing, and our counterparts in life enrichment,” said Haley. “All departments know that each component is important and contributes to our success. We’re not just checking boxes. We’re invested.”

Latest Ideas and Programs

Carolina Bay at Autumn Hall’s relationship with the University of Wilmington results in unique research opportunities. Furthermore, interns from the University work at Carolina Bay at Autumn Hall, thus ensuring that the very latest ideas and programs are available at the forefront of the programming.

Haley concluded, “We try to make everything at Carolina Bay a fun experience. My motto is ‘If you didn’t make a resident smile, you didn’t do your job.’ Wellness is a mindset, not just being physically fit and being active at the same time.”
