Culture, Community and Fun Make Wilmington, North Carolina, a Residential Hot Spot
The City of Wilmington, North Carolina, founded in 1739 along the Cape Fear River, has a long and intriguing history. The city’s past is captured in its historic district that rivals those of Savannah and Charleston. It features an array of antebellum homes and other buildings dating to the 18th and 19th centuries. The bustling heart of Wilmington is its downtown district which also celebrates history in the form of the USS North Carolina Battleship Memorial. This World War II battleship is now a museum that allows visitors to explore its decks and learn about its role in the war.
Shopping and more
Wilmington’s downtown district is also a mecca for shopping, dining, sports, public art, and live events. It’s the site of a wide range of attractions that are sure to keep everyone, no matter their age, entertained and enthralled. The Cape Fear Museum of History and Science is just one of Wilmington’s many hot spots for learning. It features a wide range of exhibits, from one highlighting the career of Wilmington native son and basketball star Michael Jordan to a replica of a giant ground sloth that roamed the region up to 1.5 million years ago.
Riverwalk
One of the city’s most compelling features is the Riverwalk, which was created in the 1980s. It is a scenic one-mile-long boardwalk offering easy access to other attractions. A walk along its boards provides water views and sun on your shoulders.
More Natural Beauty
Wilmington offers many ways to enjoy the beauty of the outdoors. One of those ways is at Airlie Gardens, which dates back to 1885. This was when Pembroke and Sarah Jones purchased the property and transformed it into a picturesque garden that today welcomes 120,000 visitors annually to see its 67 acres of flora and fauna. There are several island beaches close to Wilmington. The nearest is Wrightsville Beach, which has kayaking and paddleboard and is also a perfect spot for a walk on the shore to enjoy the sound, sight and smell of the surf.
Culture
The Cameron Art Museum brings color and vitality to visitors who enjoy a diverse collection of art featuring contemporary and historical pieces. The museum also offers rotating exhibits and educational programs. For music, The Live Oak Bank Pavilion at Riverfront Park and Greenfield Lake Amphitheater provide many opportunities to see great entertainment.
Food and fun
Whether your taste is for freshly caught shrimp, smoky barbeque ribs, or peach pie, Wilmington is the place to be. For fresh seafood, there is Seabird, which offers quality fish, oysters and wine or Catch, which has a menu featuring fine fresh seafood along with organic produce and herbs.
