Carolina Bay At Autumn Hall Senior Living Holds Its Second Annual Pinewood Derby
August 29, 2023Residents and staff of Carolina Bay at Autumn Hall senior living community in Wilmington, NC, held their second annual Pinewood Derby earlier this month.
The Boy Scouts of America first created the Pinewood Derby 70 years ago. The races pitted miniature wooden cars against each other with the purpose of inspiring a sense of accomplishment, sportsmanship and excitement.
Carolina Bay at Autumn Hall’s Pinewood Derby was the culmination of weeks of designing, decorating, and assembling the cars. The finished products sported playful themes, including the Taylor Swift Eras Tour, Angry Birds, a pirate ship, mermaids, the Batmobile, Bazooka Gum, plus many others.
The derby could not have been executed without Cub Scout Troop 242 of Wilmington. The scout master came to Carolina Bay the night before the race to set up their professional derby track. He and one of his scouts assisted racers on the day of the event to assure everything went smoothly.
The race drew 35 participants in a total of 33 heats. Following the heats, the scores were averaged and awards were given to first, second and third-place entries. The champion, Judy Meyers, who was incredibly excited to win the first time she ever participated, declared, “Girl power!” Residents Jerry Harris and Bill Johnson won second and third place after two tied races, followed by one almost too close to call.
The eagerly anticipated event at Carolina Bay at Autumn Hall was an opportunity for some residents to relive cherished memories, as well as others who experienced the Pinewood Derby for the first time.
